In 1990, a few months prior to this CD, Mel Tormé recorded a set with his trio at the Concord Jazz Festival, which climaxed with three songs with the Frank Wess-Harry Edison Orchestra. This particular CD is similar and just as enjoyable. With the assistance of pianist John Campbell, bassist Bob Maize, and drummer Donny Osborne, Tormé is swinging on "Shine on Your Shoes" and a medley of "Don't 'Cha Go 'Way Mad" and "Come to Baby Do." But it is his remarkable ballad renditions of "Star Dust" (during which Frank Wess sits in on tenor) and a definitive "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" that are most memorable; no other vocalist can hold notes so long. Read More
