For the follow-up to his excellent Moving Up Country album, British neo-folkie James Yorkston has stripped his lush sound down to the bare essentials of acoustic guitars and vocals plus a few accoutrements like banjo, accordion, and concertina. The mood of the record is low-key and well, moody, very reminiscent of Fairport Convention in the way Yorkston blends traditional melodies and modern sounds. "Someplace Simple" is an enchanting slice of pastoral folk-pop; the cover of Lal and Mike Waterson's "Scarecrow" is musically rich and warm and lyrically harrowing; "False True Love" is beautiful and quiet, showcasing Yorkston's intimate and poignant vocals.
