The tributes are pouring in as the city of Dawson Creek struggles to come to grips with the news of their mayor's death.

Dawson Creek Mayor Calvin Kruk lost his battle to lung cancer yesterday at age 43.

Kruk had been the mayor of the city since 2005. He was first elected to city council in 1999. After a bout with pneumonia, Kruk found out he had lung cancer just two months ago.

He is survived by his wife, Faith, and son Austin, 12.

Friends and fellow city administrators say the town is shocked and deeply saddened by Kruk's passing.

Dawson Creek city council met today for their regular October meeting. Chief Administrative officer Jim Chute says the meeting was a difficult one.

"It's devastating. Everyone is very shocked. Council did their best today to get through business, it was a very sombre mood. There was a couple of times people just couldn't carry on."

Chute paid tribute to Kruk's ability to rally people around his vision, particularly on sustainability and environmental issues.

"I've been in this municipal business for 29 years. And I have rarely encountered someone with the strength of conviction that Calvin had. I'll always remember him for having principles and touchstones that he returned to on all issues. Calvin always knew what he stood for and couldn't be shaken on those issues."

"The entire community became stronger under his leadership," he says.

Chute says they are leaving it up to the family to decide how they want to commemorate Kruk's memory. He says that whatever happens, they will need a large venue to accommodate everyone.
