In conjunction with the Mile Zero City's 50th anniversary this year, Tourism Dawson Creek has unveiled new downtown historic walking tour signage. The 21 plaques complete with interpretive text, preserve the City's pioneer and World War II history and makes the downtown walking tour more visually appealing.  Working in conjunction with the South Peace Historical Society to choose the final 21 photos, this is a project that has taken several years to become reality. These plaques have been placed on certain buildings in the downtown to illustrate the extent to which the Mile Zero City has changed in the past 50 years. In this modern age, over 300,000 visitors travel the Alaska Highway each year. The local tourism industry is expected to generate over 15 million dollars in the local economy alone. With the drive to make money and constantly seek new horizons, Gerry Clare of the South Peace Historical Society says it is also important to look to the past and remember that there are aspects of our heritage worth preserving. Maps of the self-guided historic walking tour are available at Tourism Dawson Creek and numerous other downtown businesses.
