A Barca Do Sol

by Alvaro Neder
The group A Barca Do Sol, formed by musicians who would be famous in different assignments (Jaques Morelembaum for his work with Caetano Veloso, Egberto Gismonti, and other artists, along with his Quarteto Jobim/Morelembaum, Ritchie as pop singer/composer, Nando Carneiro who played and recorded with Egberto Gismonti, among others), never enjoyed their deserved success. Creating and performing sophisticated material in which instrumental choro and MPB met progressive rock, the group also had an important asset in the lyrics by Geraldo Carneiro (also a Gismonti collaborator since 1971). Egberto Gismonti produced the first LP, A Barca Do Sol (1974), which included the novelty of the synthesizer. The album had the group's most successful song, "Lady Jane" (Nando Carneiro/Geraldo Carneiro). Durante O VerĂ£o (1976) and Pirata (1979) followed, both reissued in CD format in the '90s. ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide
