Growing up programming games for the Commodore 64 computer sparked Stephen Machnowski's interest in building his own electronics, specifically synthesizers. He uses his home-built synths and drum machines for his E.m.s. project (the initials stand for Electro Music Specialist). Influenced by electric beats he heard in new wave and the electro and rap breakdancers favored, Machnowski plays a robotic style of neo-electro that caught the attention of the Satamile label. After a series of singles, E.m.s. released a self-titled debut on the label in 2004.
